SAFE THAI is a Capacity Building Project, funded by the European Union catering to the chemical and hazardous substances / materials (goods as well as waste) transportation / logistics industry in Thailand.

The project closely follows and contributes to the overall policy, priorities and objectives of the Thailand- EC Cooperation Facility.

SAFE THAI is a project that aims at building the capacity of Small and Medium Enterprises involved in transportation of chemical & hazardous substances in Thailand. The project seeks to bridge the gap between the current state of industry and the one prescribed by internationally accepted standards, guidelines, conventions on hazardous substance transportation.

Objective

The Project aims to establish sound and sustainable best practices for chemical and hazardous material transportation companies in Thailand through increased awareness on EU Directives & Regulations, Multilateral Environmental Agreements and by building capacity through a series of trainings, conferences & workshops, with an aim to foster better dialogues and trade relations between the EU and Thailand.

Specific objectives

- Identify the current scenario of hazardous materials / dangerous goods logistics contributing to environmental problems and assessthe awareness (among the different players in the industry) on the relevant MEAs, such as Basel convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure (PIC) for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants that are applicable to chemical and  hazardous waste transportation.

- Develop a knowledge repository and encourage significant behavioral change through manuals, toolkits, training and visual aids, campaign materials for dissemination – focusing on sound chemical and hazardous materials management in the logistics industry.

- Foster capacity building among the target group / industry personnel on the various best practices through awareness sessions, conferences, workshops, training of the trainers and focused group discussions across the country at selected venues covering Bangkok Metropolis, Chonburi and Rayong provinces.

- Institutionalize capability and ensure sustainability by setting up communication channels such as industry groups, annual conferences and learning portals to network, analyze and improve continuously.
